Which is the most popular opera of all time? The television channel 3sat devoted an entire series of programmes to this question. Signed Media presented the ten favourite operas of 3sat viewers in equally popular and high-quality documentaries.
Legendary scenes from operas taken from the archives of Unitel/Classica, commentaries by stars of classical music such as Alina Garanča, Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann and Jonas Kaufmann, as well as award-winning enactments directed by Jan-Hinrik Drews make the series a real pleasure for novices and experts in classical music alike.
The climax: An interactive live show, presented by Daniel Hope and Mirjam Weichselbraun, accompanied by the Berlin Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Marco Armiliato.
Opera stars such as Joseph Calleja, Kate Aldrich, Ildebrando d'Arcangelo and Mojca Erdmann presented the highlights of the operatic repertoire and discussed passionately until in the end Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” was chosen by the viewers via live voting to be the “Most Beautiful Opera of All Time”.
